Saline Breast Implants Remain a Favorite in Bakersfield

286,000 women had breast augmentation surgery in 2012, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and more than half of these were performed using silicone gel breast implants. This year, the FDA granted clearance for two new cohesive silicone gel breast implants from Allergan and Sientra.

The surgeons at Beautologie Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Aesthetics perform breast augmentation on a regular basis. “It’s our most popular surgical procedure,” said Dr. Darshan Shah. “Most of them, often for reasons related the cost of breast augmentation, are still choosing the saline implants,” he added.

Plastic surgeons have been using saline implants for decades. While silicone implants use the latest technology, saline breast implants are said to offer a few distinct advantages.

Because they are filled during surgery, they use a short incision. The doctor inserts only the shell of the implant, and then fills it with saline through a small port. The level of saline can then be adjusted according to the patient’s goals.

Another advantage is price. According to plastic surgeons, the cost of saline implants is approximately $1,000 less than silicone gel implants.

“Women considering breast augmentation should weigh the benefits of each implant and make a decision with the help of a qualified surgeon,” said Dr. Shah. “I’m always happy to explain the benefits of each implant during consultations.”
